                   North Beach Homes

Of all the San Francisco neighborhoods, North Beach seems to be the most lively, brimming with laughter from the friends gathering and enjoying the variety of Italian restaurants and cafes or sharing a cappuccino. And with all that San Francisco has to offer the only hard part will be finding the perfect vacation rental for you to stay in.

Location

North Beach is located in the northeast corner of San Francisco in between Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf. It is considered to be the Little Italy of San Francisco. North Beach is sheltered from ocean breezes by Russian Hill to the west and often enjoys sunny days when much of the city is covered by fog. The American Planning Association (APA) has named North Beach as one of the top ten 'Great Neighborhoods in America'.

Points of Interest

Great intersections to check out are Union and Columbus, the southwest corner of Washington Square, Grant Avenue and Vallejo, location of Cafe Trieste, Mason and Francisco, for plenty of shopping and dining. Washington Square Park is a gorgeous park on a sunny day to spread out on a blanket before Sts. Peter & Paul Church. With all of the excitement of this area of town you may want a cozy vacation home to rest your head at night.  So why not rent our Potrero Hill house, with its modern feel and views of downtown you will feel right at home.

Fairs and Festivals

There is a street fair on Grant Avenue on Father's Day and a parade along Columbus Avenue to Aquatic Park close to Columbus Day. The North Beach Festival — San Francisco's oldest street fair — turns Grant Avenue and Green Street into a pedestrian shopping and party mall each June.  North Beach is really great, but don’t forget to see other great neighborhoods in San Francisco.  So why not stay our the Inner Sunset house and that will be a great way to get the feel of another great San Francisco neighborhood.

History

North Beach has a strong Italian American flavor due to its early 20th century history as a neighborhood of Italian immigrants.

An alleyway off of Columbus between Kearny and Broadway is named for Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac, who once lived there and frequented the famous City Lights Bookstore on the corner of Columbus and Broadway as well as several nearby bars and coffee shops. Lawrence Ferlinghetti founded City Lights Bookstore in the North Beach in 1953. Based on the idea that good books could be affordable, the paperback only bookstore was the first in the U.S. Ferlinghetti's publishing of Howl and Other Poems by Allen Ginsberg—and notoriety from the obscenity trial, which followed—helped make City Lights a literary landmark. The bookstore has served for forty-eight years as a meeting place for writers, artists, and intellectuals.

Baseball legend Joe DiMaggio grew up in North Beach and briefly returned to live there with his wife Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio came to the steps of this famous church to take family photographs after their marriage at San Francisco City Hall.  Ah, love must have been in the air and maybe you should bring your sweetheart to San Francisco and stay in one of the many great and unique vacation rental homes.  Our Ocean beach house is very romantic and just block away from the beach.

North Beach is the perfect location for sitting at an outdoor cafe and enjoying an espresso or cappuccino during the day. At night the neighborhood vibrates with some of San Francisco's liveliest nightclubs and bars.
