San Francisco Holiday highlights
Gleaming Christmas trees at Union Square
One of San Francisco's most cherished traditions is the lighting of the Christmas tree in Union Square. Hosted by Macy's, this grand ceremony has been one of Bay Area's favorite holiday festivities. On the day of the tree lighting at Union Square there will be free amusement, artists showcasing their holiday crafts and vendors selling their San Francisco souvenirs. At night, the days end with impressive lighting of the tree, decorated with beautifully colored ornaments and topped with a stunning star. The tree is an 85-foot tall California white fir that lights up at the same time as the illustrious wreath that hangs on the building of Macy's. Since Union Square is known as the heart of San Francisco, this tree is designated as the Christmas tree of San Francisco. Just a few minutes away from Union Square is the Potrero Hill neighborhood where we have a Vacation rental house to die for. Our Potrero Hill home is spacious, modern and with gorgeous San Francisco views is always a treat.
Ice Skating
Ice skating is available from dawn to late evening outdoors at the Embarcadero Center, Union Square, the San Francisco Zoo and indoors at Yerba Buena Gardens. Continue your holiday ice skating celebration with a trip to the Kristi Yamagu-chi Holiday Ice Skating Rink at the Justin Herman Plaza. Named after the well-known Olympian medalist Kristi Yamagu-chi, this ice rink is known to be the largest outdoor ice rink in Northern California. For eager patrons, the ice rink opens in the beginning of November and remains one of the most visited and pleasant holiday activities until the first day of January. The Kristi Yamaguchi Holiday Ice Skating Rink is a wonderful holiday destination for friends and family to enjoy.
Theatre
For those who enjoy the performing arts, there are two great performances that are put on annually in San Francisco during the holiday season. At the American Conservatory Theater, you and your loved ones can watch a Charles Dickens' classic - A Christmas Carol. Directed by Acarey Perioff and Paul Walsh, one can see how this new adaptation of an American classic brings the favorite characters of Scrooge and Tiny Tim to life. The San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker features choreography by Helgi Tomasson and beautifully crafted set designs by Tony Award Winner Michael Yeargan.
